Aunt Delta

Our tour of Elvis’ Graceland Mansion in Memphis was limited to the downstairs portion of the house. The guide said a Presley family member lived upstairs.
Following the house tour we were led across the back lawn to a building where the guide related some Elvis and friends gunplay stories.
Continuing across the lawn, we were asked to keep our voices down and avoid looking at Aunt Delta, who was sunning on the veranda with her nurse. However, she eyed us like a lizard observing dinner.
The guide said she was Elvis’ aunt and had a right to live at Graceland until her death. He said she couldn’t understand why so many people traipsed through her backyard. Because of her age and tendency to imbibe, he wasn’t sure she understood that Graceland was a tourist attraction, the mansion had a first floor or that Elvis was dead.
I’ve since heard stories of her eccentricity. I don’t know if they are true or not, but they do add to the Elvis mystique.
One Christmas, Elvis invited her on his plane. As he gave a gift to a member of his entourage, she began to rant.
“You ain’t no damn friend of his! And, I got a good mind to take the .38 I got in my purse and just shoot you dead!” Turning to another Elvis crony, “You ain’t worth a shit either, you wall-eyed son-of-a-bitch. All you sons-of-bitches are here for the same thing. You just want his damn money!”
Now there’s a quirky relative. Perhaps if there’s some truth to this piece of lore and Elvis had paid attention to Aunt Delta’s ability to read people, he’d be alive today.
